Week 67: Cancún

March 3, 2024

Cancún. I was in Playa del Carmen this week for a team offsite with Styra. It was the first time I'd met a lot of folk and only the second time for many others. We had a lot of fun, it really felt like it was what the team needed. I got to present something of a practical joke website I'd been planning for a while with a small team - and I went snorkeling!

Fast Primes. I also had a lot of fun playing team photographer for the week, the XF50mm F2 is in. The XF16mm F2.8, I am less of an all out fan, but it was good for some group photos - I just wish it was faster in the dark.

Humid. I managed to keep up running while over there, even at 7:30AM it was getting kinda hot to run. I ran with Torin and Tim for around 6km up and down the pedestrianised 5th Avenue before it got busy. Drivers were really well behaved.

Marginal Gains: Travel. I have a lot of travel routines and gadgets but there is always room for improvement. Following this week I have realised that my wall adapter is too heavy to properly stay in the play sockets and so have got a 1m NEMA extension cable for my travel adapter. I've also finally learned what the boarding groups used by Air Canada are and tested that you can get in group 4, even if you're group 5.

Dune. When I got home, I managed to stay awake long enough to watch the whole thing. I feel Timothée Chalamet settles into it throughout. I also found myself wondering if it'd be a less rushed pace if House Atreides were already on Arrakis at the start of the film. Anyway, we're all ready for part two when we get around to it!

End of Life. Sadly, the PostgreSQL service I use for this and my photos site has been marked for end of life next year. While finding another managed provider for these applications won't be hard, it's a chore and sad as the service has been very reliable. Taking it as another reminder that the cloud is just someone else's computer, and they control what runs there.
