Week 68: And then there was Lincoln

March 10, 2024

Popcorn Smoke. The Barbican Cinema Cafe continues to be a reliable freeloader workspace. I learned this week that you can actually rent a 'guaranteed desk' for the day, for £8 with unlimited hot drinks. Hidden gem - why ever pay for co-working? I like it so much there that I even went again on Thursday though it was much busier and the WiFi was struggling.

Six Dinner Sid. I met an old colleague for coffee and my cousin for lunch. Enjoying putting effort into seeing people in person when schedules align. I was out so much this week that I was described as Six Dinner Sid.

Ergonomic configuration files and in–memory representations of the same data are often not the same. For example, we have this requirement in Regal to support defaulting, but don't want to have every rule's logic aware of there defaulting behaviour. In order to support unmarshalling config with defaults, we now have some rather hairy Go code that munges the unstructured data. Go always feels bad for this use case, so maybe we'll rewrite it in Rego sometime.

OOM. I have run out of memory (for a recurring job that I run on my personal server to sync a contacts database to my phone's contacts). The job loads images and packs them into vCard files but it's using more RAM than I'm budgeting for... The trouble with side projects is they eventually break and then you need to make time to fix them! Thankfully I was able to do so this week.

Parakeet. I went to the Parakeet, a new restaurant that opened relatively recently, relatively near my flat. It was great with lots of really nice vegetarian options and friendly staff - and no dogs. We went to see Dune: Part 2 afterwards.

This weekend we went to see one of Anna's friends direct and perform in an adaptation of And Then There Were None. The show was great and we particularly enjoyed a behind the scenes look at the theatre, but it was also the focal point for a really nice weekend eating and walking our way around Louth and Lincoln. We had a particularly nice meal at The White Horse.

I really liked Lincoln and look forward to going back. It's a pretty city, with hills, a good rail link and nice places to get snacks.

Migration. Since learning that ElephantSQL is shutting down, I have made a start on consolidating my side project databases so that I only need to run one on the next provider. This week I've been restructuring the database for photos to work with my toolbelt database wrapper code. This is arguably some tech debt that should have been paid some time back anyway. I had quite a bit of downtime in the end as I was on the road working on it but oh well. I added two new pages in the process, a browse by lens section and a random post page too. Lots of camera chat in the pub this week too, that was fun.

One Day. Anna and I finished watching One Day. I'd not seen the film nor read the book before. I found it to be very thought provoking.

Mothers Day. My card didn't arrive in time.
